Hard Water in Dehradun — Why Your Geyser, RO and Taps Keep Failing
Dehradun's borewell water is hard. Here's what scale does to geysers, ROs, taps and washing machines, and the fixes that actually work in 2026, with costs.
Large parts of Dehradun — Raipur, Harrawala, Sahastradhara Road, Jakhan and most borewell-fed colonies — run water in the 200–400 ppm hardness range. That is not a health problem, but it is an expensive appliance problem.
What scale costs you, appliance by appliance
| Appliance | What scale does | Typical cost if ignored |
|---|---|---|
| Geyser | Coats the element, wastes power, bursts tanks | ₹3,500 – ₹9,000 |
| RO purifier | Chokes membrane, halves its life | ₹1,800 – ₹3,500 |
| Washing machine | Scales heater, stiffens clothes | ₹2,000 – ₹5,500 |
| Taps & shower mixers | Blocks aerators, seizes cartridges | ₹400 – ₹1,200 each |
| CPVC lines | Narrows bore, drops pressure over years | Re-piping |
Fixes that work — in order of value
- Annual geyser descale (₹600 – ₹1,100) — the highest-return maintenance in a Doon home
- RO with TDS controller and timely membrane change (₹1,800 – ₹3,500 per service)
- Inlet sediment filter at the tank down-take (₹1,200 – ₹2,500)
- Whole-house softener for heavy-hardness homes (₹18,000 – ₹45,000)
- Aerator soak in citric acid every few months — free, and it restores flow
What does not work
Magnetic and electronic 'descalers' clamped onto a pipe have no measurable effect on the hardness we test in Dehradun homes. Neither does an extra RO filter stage — RO handles drinking water only and does nothing for the bathroom line.
Test before you buy anything
We check hardness on site with a TDS meter and hardness strips during any RO or geyser visit at no extra charge. Under 150 ppm and you only need routine descaling; above 300 ppm a softener starts paying for itself within three years.
Frequently asked questions
Is Dehradun's water safe to drink?
Municipal supply is generally treated and safe, but hardness and post-monsoon silt mean a working RO or UV unit is still recommended for drinking water.
Will a water softener help my drinking water?
No — softeners exchange hardness minerals for sodium and are for bathing, washing and appliance protection. Keep an RO for drinking.
How often should a geyser be descaled in Dehradun?
Once a year for borewell supply, every 18 months on municipal supply. Best done just before winter, when usage peaks.
Same-day service. Pay only after the job is done.
